Galvanneal (annealed galvanized) steel sheet laser cut with a matte finish

Galvanneal Steel

Galvanneal Steel (annealed galvanized)

Galvanneal steel — also called galvannealed or annealed galvanized steel — is a zinc-coated sheet that goes back through the furnace after galvanizing. This anneal converts the zinc layer into a zinc-iron alloy with a uniform, matte gray finish, without the shiny "spangle" of regular galvanized. The result is a slightly rough surface that paint grips remarkably well, with no special primer required.

It's the fabricator's choice for any steel part meant to be painted: electrical enclosures, cladding panels, metal furniture, vehicle components. It also welds more cleanly than galvanized, with less spatter and fewer zinc fumes. Laseo fiber laser cuts it from 22 to 11 gauge, with bending, tapping, stamped collars, and powder coating available online.

Key Characteristics

Coating: A zinc-iron alloy layer (ASTM A653) created by annealing after galvanizing — harder and more matte than the pure zinc of G90.

Paint adhesion: The matte, porous surface is designed to take liquid paint or powder coating directly; it's the "paint-ready" steel par excellence.

Weldability: The zinc-iron layer, thinner and less volatile than pure zinc, gives cleaner spot and MIG welds with less outgassing.

Formability: Bends well without flaking the coating; the alloyed layer resists handling abrasion better than bright galvanized.

Good to know: Left bare outdoors, galvanneal develops surface rust faster than G90 — it's made to be painted. For a bare exterior part, choose G90 galvanized steel instead.

Galvanneal or galvanized: which to choose?

Painted or welded part → galvanneal. The superior adhesion and clean welds save time in finishing.

Part left bare outdoors (flashing, ducts, brackets) → G90 galvanized. Its thicker layer of pure zinc protects without paint.

Common Applications

Electrical enclosures and panels, control cabinets.

Automotive and trailer parts destined for paint.

Metal furniture, shelving, brackets, and interior trim.

Visible HVAC components and powder-coated commercial equipment.

Design Best Practices

Plan for paint (liquid or powder) for any outdoor exposure — cut edges expose the base steel.

Tapping is available in 16 and 14 gauge; for thinner gauges, consider clinch nuts via hardware insertion.

The matte finish hides minor handling scratches well — an advantage for parts handled before painting.
