Which metal to choose for outdoor use in Canada?

What does the Canadian climate do to metal?

Corrosion needs two things: moisture and an electrochemical path. Canada supplies both generously, then adds a formidable accelerant — the chlorides in road salt.

Bare steel rusts — fast

Without protection, carbon steel forms red rust from its first exposures to moisture. Rust is porous: it stops nothing and corrosion continues deeper.

Zinc sacrifices itself for the steel

On galvanized steel, the zinc corrodes in place of the steel — that's sacrificial protection. Even a scratch down to the metal stays protected as long as there's zinc around it.

Chlorides attack stainless

Stainless steel owes its resistance to a passive layer of chromium oxide that repairs itself. The chlorides in road salt locally puncture this layer: that's pitting corrosion.

Aluminum passivates on its own

On contact with air, aluminum instantly forms a stable oxide layer. It never makes red rust — at worst, a whitish surface oxidation, superficial and slow.

The golden rule: for an outdoor part, you never choose a metal alone — you choose a metal + finish pair, based on the part's real exposure (sheltered, exposed to rain, or drenched in road salt).

Mild steel + powder coating — the economical option

Mild steel is the most affordable and most rigid of the common choices, but bare, it rusts quickly outdoors. With powder coating, it holds up very well — as long as the paint film stays intact. A scratch down to the metal becomes a starting point for rust that can spread under the paint. Zinc plating is also offered on this material for basic protection.

Bottom line: excellent for outdoor parts that are rarely handled and not much exposed to impact. Avoid where the surface will be knocked or rubbed regularly.

G90 galvanized steel — the zinc that takes the hit for you

G90 galvanized steel arrives already protected: its shiny zinc layer corrodes sacrificially in place of the steel, even at scratches. It's the best toughness/price value for general outdoor use — fences, brackets, building hardware. Its shiny mill finish is its finish: it's used as-is.

Galvanneal steel + powder coating — the zinc-iron + color duo

Galvanneal steel is an annealed galvanized: its matte-finish zinc-iron layer offers superior paint adhesion. Combined with powder coating, you get a double barrier — the paint film at the surface, the zinc underneath that slows corrosion if the film is punctured. It's the go-to duo for painted outdoor steel parts.

Bottom line: if your steel part needs to be painted and live outdoors, this is the best starting point.

5052 aluminum — the one that never rusts

5052-H32 aluminum passivates naturally and never produces red rust. Markedly lighter than steel, it bends and welds very well. It can stay bare, or receive an anodizing that thickens and hardens its natural protective layer, or a powder coating for color.

Bottom line: the best all-around outdoor compromise — light, rust-free, with the widest choice of finishes.

304 stainless — excellent, except under direct salt

304 stainless steel shrugs off rain, snow and humidity, with a high-end look (#2B industrial or #4 brushed finishes). Its limit: repeated road-salt splashing, which can cause pitting and a light surface "tea-staining" near heavily salted roads.

Bottom line: superb outdoors, as long as the part isn't drenched in brine all winter.

316 stainless — the roadside and salty-environment choice

316 stainless steel adds molybdenum to the 304 recipe, which strengthens its passive layer specifically against chlorides. It's the so-called "marine" grade: seaside, salt-water pools, and — a very Canadian case — parts installed within reach of road salt. Offered in #2B or #4 brushed finishes.

Does galvanized steel eventually rust?

Yes, but only once the zinc is used up. The zinc corrodes sacrificially in place of the steel; as long as some remains, the steel is protected — even at scratches. Road salt speeds up zinc consumption, which shortens the protection period along roadsides.

Can galvanized steel be painted?

The shiny zinc of G90 offers poor paint adhesion. That's exactly why galvanneal steel exists: its matte zinc-iron finish is designed to be painted, and it's the one that receives powder coating at Laseo.

304 or 316 stainless for outdoors?

Does aluminum need a finish outdoors?

Will a powder-coated steel part rust?
