Comparison of 3003, 5052-H32 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloys for laser cutting

Aluminum 3003 vs 5052 vs 6061: which one to choose?

Three aluminum alloys come up constantly in laser-cutting projects : 3003, 5052 and 6061. They look alike to the eye, but their behavior in bending, machining and against corrosion is very different. This guide compares the three using our real manufacturing data and gives you a clear verdict for each type of part.

The short answer

  • Bent sheet part or exposed to the weather? Choose 5052-H32 — it's the default choice.
  • Rigid plate, tapped or machined? Choose 6061-T6.
  • Non-slip surface? 3003-H14 is offered at Laseo only as diamond-pattern checker plate.

3003 in plain sheet : why can't you find it in the app anymore?

3003 is an aluminum alloyed with manganese (Mn 1.0–1.5 %), known for its excellent formability and good corrosion resistance. The catch : 5052-H32 does everything 3003 does — forming, weather resistance, anodizing — with markedly higher mechanical strength, for an identical use. Offering both in plain sheet amounted to duplicating inventory with no benefit to the customer.

Plain 3003 sheet is no longer offered at Laseo. For any aluminum sheet part, our app offers 5052-H32 or 6061-T6. 3003 remains available in H14 temper as diamond-pattern checker plate (1/8″, 3/16″ and 1/4″), where its easy forming is a real asset. It stays in this comparison as a reference point — it's the alloy many people think of by default.

What are the mechanical differences between the three alloys?

The figures below come from our material spec sheets. Remember the trend : strength climbs from 3003 to 6061, but ease of forming goes the opposite way.

An interesting detail : in fatigue, 5052-H32 (17 ksi) outperforms 6061-T6 (14 ksi). For a part subject to continuous vibration — think trailer — that's no small thing.

Why is 5052-H32 the default choice in sheet?

Its magnesium (2.2–2.8 %) gives it remarkable corrosion resistance, including in marine and salty environments — it's the alloy of boat hulls and roadside equipment across Canada. With 12 % elongation at break, it bends without cracking, which makes it our go-to aluminum for any formed part.

The widest range

13 thicknesses in stock, from 24 gauge (0.020″) up to 1/2″ (0.500″). No other aluminum at Laseo covers such a wide spread.

The only bendable aluminum in plain sheet

Bending is offered from 24 gauge up to 1/4″, with angles from 5° to 130° (90° max from 3/16″) and a tolerance of ±1° per bend.

Complete operations

Tapping from 14G to 1/2″ (M2 up to 1/2-20 UNF depending on thickness), countersinking, hardware insertion, dimpling, engraving.

All aluminum finishes

Anodizing on all thicknesses, powder coating from 14 gauge, printed graphics.

In practice : if you're hesitating between the three alloys and your part has at least one bend, the debate is already settled — it's 5052-H32. The detailed design rules are in our bending guide.

When does 6061-T6 become the right choice?

6061-T6 is a heat-treated alloy (T6 temper) alloyed with magnesium and silicon. The result : 45 ksi ultimate strength and 39 ksi yield strength — 6061's yield strength even exceeds the ultimate strength of 5052. At 93 HB hardness, it taps cleanly and holds its threads : it's the alloy of mounting plates, jigs, structural brackets and "near-machined" parts.

Note : bending is not offered on 6061-T6. The T6 temper makes the alloy too hard and brittle for reliable air bending — it tends to crack along the bend line. If your design requires bends, switch to 5052-H32 ; if it requires the rigidity of 6061, design the part flat and assemble it with hardware.

Something to plan for on surface appearance. 6061-T6 is intended for mechanical and structural parts, not aesthetic or decorative ones. Unlike other sheets, it doesn't arrive covered with a protective SPV-type film by default : it's therefore much more likely to be delivered with a few surface scratches. If your part absolutely must be scratch-free, write to us at info@laseo.ca with your order number : your parts will then be delivered with an SPV-type protective film.

All three alloys anodize — anodizing requires a hole in the part to hang it in the bath, and the maximum anodizable size is 23″ × 23″. Appearance note : clear anodizing gives a more uniform result on 5052 ; the silicon in 6061 can slightly tint the finish. For perfectly consistent color from part to part, powder coating remains the most predictable option.
