Mild steel part cut on a fiber laser

Which steel for your part?

The right choice mostly comes down to two questions: will the part be painted, and what environment will it live in? Each datasheet details the thicknesses, tolerances and available operations.

Laser-cut mild steel

Mild steel (1008 / 44W)

The economical carbon steel. Ideal for brackets, frames and parts that will be painted.

22 gauge to 1/2″ · bending up to 1/4″

See the mild steel datasheet
Laser-cut G90 galvanized steel

G90 galvanized steel

Bright zinc coating, the most economical corrosion protection. Ideal for outdoor parts left bare, ducting and flashing.

24 to 12 gauge · bendable

See the galvanized datasheet
Laser-cut galvanneal steel

Galvanneal steel

Uniform matte finish, superior paint adhesion and weldable. Ideal for powder-coated enclosures, panels and covers.

22 to 11 gauge · bendable

See the galvanneal datasheet
Laser-cut 304 stainless steel

304 stainless steel

The most versatile, food-grade stainless. Industrial #2B finish, #4 brushed for visible surfaces, #1 in heavy thicknesses.

24 gauge to 1/2″ · bending up to 1/4″

See the 304 stainless datasheet
Laser-cut 316 stainless steel

316 stainless steel

The marine stainless: molybdenum protects it from salt and chlorides. Ideal near the sea, road salt or chlorinated products.

24 gauge to 1/8″ · #2B or #4 finish

See the 316 stainless datasheet

316 stainless24G to 1/8″✓—✓ 24G to 1/8″✓Yes, even with salt and chlorides

All these grades are fiber laser cut and accept self-clinching hardware (except galvanneal) and laser engraving (except mild steel). The app automatically validates which operations are possible for the chosen grade and thickness.

Two questions come up often. Galvanized or galvanneal? Part left bare: G90. Part powder coated or welded: galvanneal — see galvanized or galvanneal. 304 or 316? 304 by default; 316 as soon as the part will live around chlorides — see 304 or 316 stainless.

Steel cutting FAQ

Galvanized or galvanneal steel?

If the part stays unpainted, choose G90 galvanized. If it will be powder coated or welded, choose galvanneal: it is the only one of the two offered with powder coating at Laseo.

304 or 316 stainless?

304 covers most indoor and outdoor uses. Move to 316 as soon as the part will be exposed to chlorides: salt air, road salt, brines or bleach washdowns.

What is the maximum steel thickness?

1/2″ in mild steel (44W hot rolled) and 304 stainless. Galvanized goes up to 12 gauge, galvanneal up to 11 gauge and 316 stainless up to 1/8″.

What is the lead time, and is there a minimum quantity?

You can order from a single part. Parts ship in 4 to 8 business days, and shipping is free across Canada ($49 minimum order).
