Stainless steel finishes: #1 vs #2B vs #4

When you order a stainless steel part, choosing the surface finish is just as important as choosing the grade. The finish determines the part's appearance, how it behaves when cleaned and, in many gauges, it's even dictated for you — some thicknesses exist in only one finish. This guide explains where the #1, #2B and #4 brushed finishes come from, and which one to choose for your project.

One clarification first: the finish describes the surface condition of the sheet as delivered by the mill or the polishing center. Fiber laser cutting doesn't change it — the faces of your part keep their original finish, and the cut edges are identical from one finish to another.

Stainless is a steel (iron alloyed with chromium and nickel), and its rolling finishes carry designations standardized by ASTM A480: #1 comes from hot rolling, #2B and #4 from cold rolling, with or without a final polish. So it's the rolling step at the mill — not a treatment done at our shop — that determines the sheet's appearance and texture.

#1 finish — hot rolled

The stainless sheet is hot rolled, annealed, then acid pickled to remove the oxide layer formed by the heat. The result is a matte, grayish surface that's visibly rougher than the cold-rolled finishes.

It's the finish for heavy thicknesses: at Laseo, it's reserved for 304 in 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″. At these thicknesses, we're talking base plates, mounts and flanges — parts where no one is judging appearance.

#2B finish — cold rolled

Cold rolled, annealed, pickled, then passed a final time between polished rollers. The surface is smooth, matte, pearl gray and slightly reflective — it's the standard "mill" finish of stainless sheet.

The best value for industrial parts: enclosures, machine guards, flanges, brackets. Offered in 304 from 20 gauge to 3/16″ and in 316 from 24 gauge to 1/8″.

#4 finish — brushed

A cold-rolled sheet is mechanically polished to create a directional satin grain, uniform and clearly visible. It's the classic look of commercial kitchens and stainless appliances.

The choice for any surface the customer will see: panels, cladding, decorative plates. Offered in 304 from 24 to 11 gauge and in 316 from 18 gauge to 1/8″.

Which finish is offered in which thickness?

It's often the thickness that decides for you. In 304, the very thin gauges (24 and 22 gauge) exist only in #4 brushed, 3/16″ exists only in #2B, and plates of 1/4″ and up exist only in #1. Conversely, in 316, the thin gauges (24 to 20 gauge) exist only in #2B. The real zone of choice is the mid-range.

316 stops at 1/8″ at Laseo. For a thicker plate, you need to switch to 304.

Which finish for which project?

Commercial kitchen, countertops, cladding

#4 brushed. The satin grain is the visual reference of the trade and hides fingerprints and everyday micro-scratches better than a smooth surface.

Enclosures, machine guards, internal brackets

#2B. No one will see the part: the standard mill finish does the job, with no compromise on corrosion resistance.

Food processing, dairy, wash-down zones

#2B or #4 depending on visibility — both cold-rolled surfaces are smooth and easy to sanitize. If wash-downs are chlorinated, the real question becomes the grade: see our 304 vs 316 comparison.

Structural base plates, mounts, heavy flanges

#1. It's the only finish offered in 1/4″ and up anyway. The rougher pickled surface has no functional impact on this type of part.

Railings and architectural hardware

#4 brushed for anything seen and touched. Along salted roads or in coastal zones, combine it with 316 (offered in #4 from 18 gauge to 1/8″).

Engraved panels, ID plates

#4 brushed when the plate is decorative, #2B when it's utilitarian. Laser engraving works on both.

Three details to plan for in design

  1. 1. Grain direction on #4

    The brushed grain is directional. On an assembly of several visible parts, orient the grain in the same direction on all parts — a panel with cross-grain stands out immediately.

  2. 2. The finish doesn't change the bending rules

    Whatever the finish, stainless work-hardens during forming and shows more springback than mild steel. The radii, K-factors and minimum flanges per thickness are in our bending guide.

  3. 3. No tapping on stainless

    Tapping is not offered on 304 or 316. For threads, plan holes sized for self-clinching hardware insertion (PEM nuts) — the operation is done before bending.
