Chipboard

Versatile, accessible brown cardboard, chipboard suits mockups, prototypes, displays, book covers, lettering, and creative projects. It cuts quickly and precisely with CO₂ laser, assembles easily with glue, and can be hand-folded on thin thicknesses.

Made from recycled fibers/papers and recyclable at end of life, it's an economical option to iterate concepts without breaking the budget. Ideal for prototyping: lightweight parts, quick adjustments, short lead times.

Key Characteristics

Material: Chipboard ("pasteboard") from recycled fibers; natural brown tint, matte surface.

Thicknesses: From very thin (flexible for folding/mockups) to denser (rigid for jigs and backs). Choose based on desired rigidity.

Process: Fast, precise CO₂ laser cutting (fine lines, clean curves). Marking/engraving possible for creases, marks, and folds.

Assembly: White glue (PVA), glue stick, double-sided tapes; staples or mini fasteners for prototypes.

Finish: Slightly browned laser edges; can be painted, stained, varnished, or covered with adhesives/prints.

Environment: Dry indoor use. Sensitive to moisture and splashes; avoid structural loads.

Design Best Practices

Plan slight clearance on joints to account for laser kerf and tolerances.

Protect from moisture; choose appropriate glues and tapes and allow cure time before handling.
